Indeed Flex
Freelance agency work for Indeed’s Flex app, including interactive prototypes and iconography
Scenario
Indeed had recently acquired Syft, a gig-working platform, and was in the process of aligning the visual style of the app with their own. Job types/positions required iconographic labels for categorization and glanceable context. The agency completing the project was also in need of interactive prototypes to breathe life into user flows and demonstrate functionality to Indeed’s Flex team.
Discovery & Preparation
The agency supplied me with several mockups of the UI and scenarios for a Site Manager usecase along with steps necessary for a user to complete the scenario correctly in the app.
After getting my bearings, I noticed several elements that would benefit from reusability. I created components of toggles, radio buttons, and dropdowns that appear frequently in the flows and replaced the existing groups with my new assets.
Prototyping
I worked my way through each step of the flow, utilizing Figma’s tools to build immersive prototypes demonstrating all available options encountered in the scenario. I begin with basic frame to frame navigation, progressing to granular interactions and prototype logic once the basic flow is established.
The scenario covers posting a new job to Indeed Flex via a pre-existing template. Flex allows users to save job postings as templates that can be edited in the future or chosen from a list to quickly repost.
Iconography
After submitting my prototype work, I was asked to work on iconography for jobs and job categories. The agency had only created icons for select categories that appeared in designs up to that point and needed 20+ more. Through a combination or original vector designs, revisions to existing icons, and kit-bashing, I was able to complete the full set.
I began by revising several icons, focusing on balance and consistency across the lineup.
I then moved on to fleshing out designs for the remaining categories. Some job types were wide enough in their terminology for me to provide several icon options, including the Festival Staff and Facility Security categories, as shown below:
In the end, I created 28 unique icons covering 44 job types and categories.
Conclusion
This freelance agency work helped me gain valuable skills in prototyping and icon design while working as part of a distributed team under tight deadlines.
